Reflections

Emilie Rolin invites the viewer on a personal reflective journey through her work. Her images symbolize her own perceptive path of meditation. She draws her inspiration from her immediate physical environment. There are no preferences regarding the themes included in each image, although her surroundings influence her directly, now Hong Kong. The dark yellow tone that characterizes this work is a product of Emilie’s meditation as she senses it through a warm sphere. Emilie has been taking her pictures in Europe, in the USA and in Asia since September 2009; these images are the raw material she uses. With the help of modern tools Emilie creates a new story by bringing these images and objects together. Each artwork consists of two to five different pictures, merged together. This results in a balanced and harmonic image reflecting Emilie’s own meditative state.

Belgian born and raised in Paris, France, Emilie was influenced from an early age on by her father, himself an enthusiastic amateur photographer. At the age of 17, Emilie was taking a photography course at Exeter summer school in the USA where she printed her first black and white photographs. One particular picture made one of Emilie’s teacher comment: "This photograph could be in Vogue", this comforted her in undertaking a career as a photographer.

After graduation at INRACI in Brussels, Belgium, she went on to become a freelance photographer, balancing her time between corporate and artistic work. In 2009, Emilie decided to develop her artistic career further and enrolled in a master’s program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Now she lives in Hong Kong developing her art.
